  • History

Gainesville, Florida, has a high percentage of pedestrian and bicycle based transit. However, more could be done to promote cycling in our community. In Fall 2007, a group of people convened at Ring Park in Gainesville to discuss the possibility of addressing unmet transportation needs of the cycling community. In particular, how can someone learn to maintain one’s own bike properly, learn to fix mechanical problems, or help others with their bike problems? From that first potluck meeting and subsequent meetings, the Gainesville Community Bike Project (The Kickstand) was born.

Committed volunteers formed a non-profit business, located warehouse space, and started providing bicycle related services true to its mission.
